Hilary Hahn here playing Schoenberg’s violin concerto, the second movement. I find this music to be beautiful and so benign. Also very much to the point. Serialism gets so often talked about, analysed and criticised too for being too intellectual. In fact, it was made into an intellectual specimen by the critics and listeners. I don’t find this music in anyway unsettling, disturbing or harsh – words often associated with this level of dissonance. It helps too to have such a great recording as this.
